The structure of GrassNet  aims at linking research institutions in South-America, Sub-Saharan-Africa and North China with institutions for higher education in Germany to exchange knowledge, scientific methods, and to gain from experiences with approaches already initiated.

Based on ongoing research activities, that are coordinated by the Senior Scientists counterparts in the respective partner countries, the Post-Doc involved in the research program will directly guide a PhD student from a local University. Both will visit Germany for some period of 6-12 months. These visits will provide the PhD students with the opportunity to conduct in-depth studies related to his or her PhD research work at the host institution under the guidance of a German professor. The Post-Doc will use these visits to either use specific technology available at the host institution or to acquire specific methods to be implemented at the home institution as a follow-up of the visit.

The visits will coincide with the intake of 6 MSc students each in 2009 and 2011 allowing to select the MSc students and guide their education to gain first hand experience in the respective systems when implementing their MSc-Thesis research. The MSc students will have to meet the admission requirements of established MSc programs at the two German Universities, namely, “Agricultural sciences in the Tropics and Subtropics – AgriTropics” at the University of Hohenheim and “International Organic Agriculture – IOA” at the University of Kassel in Witzenhausen.
